Jennifer and Laura have both been thinking about making a quilt out of their old T-Shirts. Laura needed some help, so we decided to have a girls day and got together to work on this project. We met at Jennie's and she was prety excited to have us there working on this fun project in her hobby room. We had a great time working, talking, sipping wine/water, and listening to Michael Buble'.
Laura has LOTS of shirts from different school, music and theater events. She actually has enough that she is going to use shirts on both sides of her quilt. One side will have her theater shirts and the other her school, music, and some miscellaneous others. Jennie is using the shirts from her CUNA Management School that she attended for 3 summers at Pamona College in California. They had shirts for all the different events, so she will have a nice size quilt. The first thing we needed to do was look at all the shirts and decide just which ones to use.
Once the shirts were chosen we cut the designs out from either the front or the back and sometimes from both.
Sometimes there wasn't much left of the shirt. On this particular brown shirt we wanted to use the front and the back. Laura is modeling what was left.
Since the t-shirt material is kind of stretchy we needed to add some iron on interfacing to make it stable and easier to sew.
Next came the fun, or not so fun, part of centering the design and squaring up the block . This was a little challenging with some of the designs and also Laura's small T-Shirts from when she was a little girl. Laura didn't like this part so much.
Jennie is working on centering her design and then she will cut out the block using a rotary cutter and not the scissors that you see beside her.

It's a lot of work to get the blocks ready to sew. Here are some of Laura's finished blocks, and a few unfinished ones.Jennie has her blocks finished and is working on the layout. Next she will add the sashing and sew them all together. She has decided to use black flannel for this and we saw a very cute frog print flannel that she will use for her backing. The frog was the mascot for the school and most of the T-Shirts have a frog on them, so this will be perfect for the backing.
