Produce Fields

We went for another trip out to see the fields. We were hoping to see some of the harvesting, as we missed that on our last trip out. This is a field that has just been planted. They irrigate in many different ways. On this field they have have flooded the ditches. Sometimes they use sprinklers and sometimes they flood the whole field. They are having Lettuce Days next weekend and we will probably learn more about the growing process then.
This is what a field looks like once the lettuce has grown...
and this is what it looks like after it has been harvested. If you look carefully you will see heads of lettuce that have been left behind. We are not sure why so many are left in the field, but hopefully this is another thing we will learn about when we go to Lettuce Days. We went into the field and brought home a few heads of lettuce. We have so much that we are now using it in place of bread. Ever had lettuce wraps? Well, we have them for lunch every day.

Here's a couple of the heads we brought home today. Though they are very nice we wonder if they are to small to be picked for selling.
Next we moved to a field of Romain that was being harvested. These people are fast workers. They cut and trim the Romain, then place it on a shelf. It is then sprayed, bagged, boxed and ready to be sent to the markets. Sometimes they just box it. Here's a short video of the process.

I added some still pictures so you can take a closer look at the harvesting.

We also saw a field of broccoli being harvested. Since broccoli continues to grow we think they may go over these fields more than once.
You can see the deep ruts the machinery cuts in the field. Since they keep the fields fairly wet it can be very muddy.

Pegs and Jokers

Keith and Sheral come over occasionally and bring their game "Pegs and Jokers". A friend of theirs made this set for them and the woodwork is beautiful. It's a game that can be set up for 4-12 players, which is pretty clever. It's played similar to Aggravation in that you start your 5 markers in one spot and need to get them to home. Different cards let you move your makers in a variety of ways. It's pretty fun, but don't sit by Bill or Keith as they will ALWAYS send your markers back home.
Ron, Doris, Keith, Thelma, Don, Bill and Sheral
Sheral is counting the spaces, as she is just about to move her last marker home.Bill and Thelma also have a game similar to "Pegs and Jokers". Since they don't have a name for it I call it the "BFG" - Bill's Frustrating Game. I call it that because once again the other players are trying to send their opponents back home.

Yuma Park and Swap

Today Thelma and I went to the Yuma Park and Swap Market. I have been wanting to go as last year I got some of the Fisher Price Little People there and I was hoping to get a few more. I did a get a couple, but not what I was really looking for. Disappointment :-(. However, we did find a few others things and had a great time. Sunday's are very busy days there, so it was quite exciting. This was a great produce stand. We got avocados, green and red peppers, and tomatoes. Thelma also got a fruit that we were not familiar with. She likes to try different things. Ah, she also got one of the little watermelons.
This is a sample of one of the booths. What you see laying on the tables are socks. People buy them by the bag full. I think I figured out why there are so many at the the markets and why people buy so many. This year I have really noticed our socks getting terribly dirty. I have tried soaking them in bleach and I still can't get them clean. We don't wear our shoes in the house, or even walk around in our socks. We have decided it is just all the dust that gets in our shoes. Soooo, looks like I will be buying new socks for us to wear when we get home.

Card Bingo

We play card bingo on Wednesday nights. Instead of calling numbers like B 6 the caller will say the name of a card. If you get rid of all your cards you say BINGO! We have been pretty lucky this year as Ron has won 3 times and I won once. Since you play with a team of 4 the money is split between the 4 players. Look at Bill. He thought he would be creative with his card lay out in hopes that he would win.
Ron must have been getting bored with the normal layout, so decide to give himself a challenge by laying the cards on their side. Silly, silly boys, but whatever works to win is OK with me. Here's the funny thing. One night Ron was to sick to go, so I played his hand for him. Wold you believe he won and he wasn't even there. Why isn't he buying lottery tickets or going to the casino?

Jennie's Visit

Jennie came to Yuma for a visit and to see what the retired people do every day. I think she was quite surprised to see that there is a lot of activity going on here and very little sitting. She said it was like hanging out with a bunch of college kids only 50 years later. We kept her pretty busy while she was here, and told her that the days were pretty typical of how we spend our time. I think we wore her out as she was ready for bed every night. She arrived at 11:45 PM, so it was after midnight before she got to bed. Ron had her up and playing tennis bright and early the next morning.

They were predicting rain, so as long as we had sun today we went to the pool after lunch. How could I have forgotten my camera? After dinner Bill and Thelma joined us for a game of shuffleboard. Bill is the champ, so he said he would help Jennie. I wanted her to give it a try. They put wax on the pads, so you barely touch the disks and they go sailing. The next day we went to the craft sale in the park and then headed to Algadones, Mexico. Jennie wasn't to sure about making this trip, but soon found that is was quite fun. There were so many people walking along with us that she said she felt like she was in line at Disneyland. The stores have been taken over by dentists, doctors and optometrists. There are hundreds of dentists in this small town. All the vendors have moved to the streets. It's like walking through a tunnel of merchandise. Jennie couldn't believe all the stuff there was to look at. It's a shopping overload!

We saw a long line forming and realized it was people waiting for fish tacos. It was a little early for lunch, but we decided to give them a try. Oh, there were actually fish and shrimp tacos, so we tried them both. Mmmm, they hit the spot!Jennifer was quite amazed at these prices, so we had to take a picture of them. Some are a little hard to read, but they say: Hair Cut Men's $4.00, Manicure ?, Hair Tint $18.00, ? $5.00 Tops, Pedicure $12.00, High Lights $18.00, Perms $16.00, Hair Cut Women $5.00. Don't you wish we had these prices at home?

We finished the day off with a Skype with Amber. The next day there was rain, so we decided to go to the markets. Turned out the rain was short lived and the sun came out around noon. On the way from what we call the Mervyn's Market to Old Town Yuma we passed by a cemetery. We took some time to take a few pictures. Next we were off to the Arizona Market. Jennie was impressed with how many things there were to look at. She thought Mexico had a lot, then she saw the markets. She couldn't believe the rows and rows of booths filled with things. She had a great time looking at beads.
Hmm, I wish I could remember the name of this piece of material. It is made up of 2 layers of fabric and looks like it would be a wrap around skirt. However, it can be worn in hundreds of different ways. We thought this one shoulder dress was pretty cute. Of course the guy helping her was pretty good at all the styles. When we got home we tried a few, but weren't very successful. Jennie thinks it might end up as a swimsuit cover up and not a dress.
On Sunday we headed out to see the people camping on the desert. On the way we stopped at this cute little church that a farmer built for his wife.
We also passed the Yuma Proving Grounds as we were getting closer to the camping area. This base is where they test all equipment that will be used by the military. It must pass the tests or it will not be issued to our military personnel.Of course we had to stop so Jennie could see the "Liberry". Inside the sign says this is a lending liberry and not a taking liberry. You can take books to read, but they want you to bring them back so others can also read them. If you bring books from home, and don't want them after you read them, you can also leave them in the "Liberry" and they will be shelved and shared. Jennie is checking out the books. We are not borrowing any today, just looking.
At this point Jennie should be on her way home. However, as her plane was taxing to the runway they found a problem with one of the engines and returned to the terminal. She was hoping she would get bumped so she could stay a few days longer. Well, she got her wish. Since she only had 30 minutes to make her Seattle connection in Phoenix she soon realized there was no way she was going to make it. The next time they could get her tickets was for Wednesday. Oh, to bad she gets to stay a few days longer!!! :-)

Tuesday was our anniversary. This was one of Jennie's bonus days and there were several things we thought of doing, but ended up just staying home. Since we had sunshine we did spend some time in the pool and I once again forgot my camera.

Tonight we went out to dinner with some friends to celebrate our anniversary. Jennie was able to join us, which was great fun.
Jennie did get on her flight on Wednesday morning. It was great having her here and I think she had a good time. It will be pretty quiet now that she is gone.

Happy Valentine's Day

One of the ladies in the park offered a class on how to make these table runners. It's a different technique where you iron the pieces on a grid and then sew the 1/4 inch seems. It goes pretty quickly and all the corners are perfect. Close ups of the table runner.

Yuma Silver Spur Rodeo

Today we went to the Yuma Jaycee's Silver Spur Rodeo. This is the 66th year for this event and is a pretty big event for the town. They had a parade on the first morning to start off the festivities. We went on Sunday afternoon and there was lots of excitement and lots of people.
